Unlike paperback or hardcover printing, board books require specialised equipment and processes. Most print-on-demand services don’t offer board books because of the fixed setup costs involved in each production step.
Our Board Book Printing Process
1. File Review and Artwork Preparation
We start by reviewing your files to ensure the trim size, bleed (3mm), and page order are correct. For board books, we recommend designing in spreads (two facing pages) rather than individual pages.

2. Offset Printing on Thick Cardstock
We print your artwork on a Heidelberg offset press — the industry standard for high-quality printing. We use 350gsm cardstock, printing single-sided with a spread layout so artwork flows seamlessly across facing pages.
Printing full colour (CMYK) ensures vibrant, accurate reproduction of illustrations — critical for children’s books.
3. Lamination for Durability
After printing, we apply gloss or matte lamination to the printed sheets. This creates a protective layer that is:

4. Bonding Two Sheets into One “Board” Page
This is the defining step of board book manufacturing. We apply adhesive with glue rollers, align two printed sheets back to back, and run them through press rollers under high pressure. After bonding, each finished page is about 1mm thick — the standard thickness for professional board books.
For thicker or thinner pages, we can adjust the paper weight accordingly.
5. Trimming and Corner Rounding
We use a cutting die to trim pages to the final size, then round the corners for safety. Rounded corners prevent injuries and reduce wear over time.
6. Assembly and Quality Control
Each book is assembled by hand or on automated lines, ensuring pages stay aligned. We perform 100% quality inspection before packing — checking page alignment, colour consistency, binding strength, and overall durability.
