Side-panel “piano style” modules are cheaper because they require less complex die-cutting, while embedded page-triggered buttons create a cleaner look but demand precise alignment between artwork, board layers, and the membrane switch.
Light sensor modules are used in higher-end books. A concealed sensor triggers audio when ambient light hits it as the page turns. This creates a seamless, button-free experience, but requires extremely tight manufacturing tolerances to prevent accidental triggering while the book is closed.
What we need from you: Audio files in WAV or MP3 format, a button-to-track mapping document, and your target age group. Audio duration directly affects module cost—longer recordings require larger memory chips.
Battery Safety: The Non-Negotiable
Battery design is where most sound book projects fail compliance. Because these products contain small parts and are marketed to children, regulators scrutinize them closely.
Battery compartment security: For children under three, the compartment must be secured with a screw that cannot be removed by a child. Snap-fit covers are not compliant. Our standard uses recessed cross-head machine screws that pass torque resistance and drop tests.
Insulation pull-tabs: A plastic tab breaks the circuit during shipping and warehousing. Correct insertion is a critical QC checkpoint—if the tab is missing, the battery drains before the book reaches the shelf.
Acoustic limits: Sound output must be calibrated for young ears. We target 65–75 dB at 25cm distance, well below the EN71-1 maximum of 85 dB.
Compliance: What You Must Confirm Before Production
Sound books fall under toy safety regulations in most markets. Your printer can use compliant materials, but formal certification often requires third-party laboratory testing.
For the US (CPSIA / ASTM F963): Children’s products require a Children’s Product Certificate (CPC) based on ISO 17025 lab testing. Key tests include lead content (100 ppm limit), phthalates (8 types, 0.1% limit), and physical/mechanical safety. If the book contains a button cell battery, UL 4200A applies—requiring a tool-accessed battery compartment and swallow-hazard warnings on the product, packaging, and instructions.
For Europe (EN71): EN71-1 covers mechanical safety and acoustic limits; EN71-2 covers flammability; EN71-3 covers migration of 19 heavy metals. Battery-containing products also require RoHS compliance and CE marking.
Practical reality: Most Chinese printing factories—including ours—use child-safe materials and can provide material safety data, but do not issue formal compliance certificates themselves. If your retailer or distributor requires certified lab reports, budget for third-party testing with SGS, Intertek, or Bureau Veritas.
