Choosing the Right Binding Method for Your Book Project
One of the most important decisions you’ll make for your custom book printing project is how your book will be bound. The two most common methods are sewn binding and perfect binding — and each serves very different purposes.
At our book printing factory in China, we help self-publishers, independent authors, and publishers from the US, UK, Europe, and beyond choose the right binding for their 500-copy print runs. Here‘s everything you need to know.
What Is Perfect Binding?
Perfect binding is the most common binding method for paperback books. Pages are gathered into a book block, the spine edge is roughened or ground down, and a strong adhesive (hot-melt glue) is applied to hold the pages together. The cover is then wrapped around and pressed onto the glue .
Why choose perfect binding?
-
Clean, professional appearance with a square, printable spine
-
Cost-effective, especially for short to medium runs
-
Works well for novels, trade paperbacks, manuals, and catalogues
Things to keep in mind:
-
Books don‘t open completely flat
-
Over time and heavy use, the glue can weaken and pages may come loose
-
Not as durable as sewn binding
What Is Sewn Binding?
Sewn binding (also called thread-sewn or section-sewn binding) is considered the gold standard for durability. Pages are grouped into signatures (folded sections), and each signature is stitched together with thread through the folds. The sewn sections are then glued together for extra support and attached to the cover .
Why choose sewn binding?
-
Incredibly durable — pages are far less likely to come loose over time
-
Books open more easily and lay flatter when opened
-
Ideal for long-life books: histories, textbooks, reference books, and keepsakes
Things to keep in mind:
-
Costs more than perfect binding due to extra processes
-
Takes slightly longer to produce
-
May be more than needed for disposable or short-use books
