What Publishers Must Get Right Before Printing 500 Copies
Toddlers don’t read books. They chew them, throw them, sit on them, and turn pages with the enthusiasm of a tiny tornado. A board book that isn’t built for that reality will fail — and the publisher will hear about it in reviews.
At our book printing factory in China, we produce board books for toddlers with the three things that matter most: the right thickness, rounded corners, and full safety compliance. Here’s what publishers need to know before ordering 500 copies.
Board Thickness: The Numbers That Matter
Board book pages are typically made by mounting two printed sheets around a rigid greyboard core. The finished page thickness determines how the book feels, how it survives handling, and how easy it is for small hands to turn.
Common thickness options:
| Thickness | Best For | Handling Characteristics |
|---|---|---|
| 1mm (40pt) | Standard toddler books | Sturdy, still flexible enough for easy page turning |
| 1.5mm (60pt) | Premium feel, aggressive handlers | Extra rigid, more substantial, slightly heavier |
| 2mm+ | Specialty or very large formats | Maximum durability, but adds bulk and weight |
For most 500-copy board book orders, 1mm is the safe starting point — it balances durability with usability. If your target audience is particularly young (0–2 years) or the book will see heavy institutional use, 1.5mm is worth the modest cost increase.
Page count note: Board books for toddlers typically run 8–24 pages . Keep this in mind when planning your story and spread count.
Rounded Corners: A Safety Feature, Not a Design Choice
Sharp corners on a board book are a liability. When a toddler falls on a book, or swings it near a sibling’s face, rounded corners reduce the risk of injury. They also hold up better over time — square corners dog-ear and fray faster.
What we offer:
-
R5mm or R10mm corner radius depending on book format and safety requirements
-
Mechanical rounding during die-cutting — the printer handles this, not the designer
Critical file preparation note: Do not design rounded corners in your artwork. Keep your files as square-cornered spreads with proper bleed. The printer applies the rounded corners mechanically during production. If you pre-round them in your file, you’ll misalign the bleed and trim .
Safe zone: Keep all critical text and images at least 5mm inside the trim line. A 1mm shift during die-cutting can slice off content placed too close to the edge .
Safety Standards: What US and EU Markets Require
This is where many first-time children’s book publishers get caught out. Board books are not automatically exempt from toy safety regulations just because they’re books.
United States (CPSIA)
The Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act (CPSIA) applies to products intended for children 12 and under. While “ordinary books” may have exemptions, board books for children under 3 — especially those with interactive elements like flaps or textures — can fall under stricter testing requirements .
Key compliance points to confirm with your printer:
-
Lead content in substrate and surface coatings must meet CPSIA limits
-
Phthalates must be within permitted levels
-
Small parts testing if the book includes any detachable components
-
Tracking labels may be required on the final product
Europe (EN 71)
For EU sales, EN 71 is the relevant standard, covering:
-
EN 71-1: Mechanical and physical properties (sharp edges, small parts)
-
EN 71-2: Flammability
-
EN 71-3: Migration of certain elements (heavy metals)
Important reality check: Most printing factories in Asia — including ours — use compliant materials and child-safe inks, but do not issue formal compliance certificates themselves. If your retailer or distributor requires certified lab testing, you’ll need to work with a qualified third-party lab like SGS, Intertek, or Bureau Veritas .
Inks and Materials: What to Specify
For toddler board books, material safety starts with what goes on the page:
Inks: Specify soy-based or vegetable-based inks. These are lower in toxicity than petroleum-based alternatives and are increasingly the industry standard for children’s products.
Paper and board: Request FSC-certified greyboard and paper where possible. This verifies responsible sourcing and is increasingly expected by Western retailers.
Lamination: A protective matte or gloss lamination on the cover and pages improves resistance to moisture, drool, and wiping. It also prevents ink from transferring to little hands.
Why 500 Copies Is the Sweet Spot for Board Books
For publishers, self-publishing authors, and brands creating toddler board books, 500 copies is the practical starting point:
-
Offset printing becomes economical — setup costs spread across enough units to keep per-copy pricing competitive
-
Safety testing costs are amortized — if you’re arranging third-party lab testing, 500 copies makes the per-unit cost reasonable
-
Inventory is manageable — 500 board books fit in a compact space
-
You can test the market before committing to a larger reprint
